Investment Clubs Turn Up in the Most Unlikely Places |
6/12/2007 |
While surfing the web, I came across a sample partnership agreement in a most usual place.

As I was perusing the Internet this week, I came across a sample partnership agreement for investment clubs. Nothing odd about that, except for the location. This particular sample agreement is hosted on Microsoft Office Online, a web-based library of templates suitable for use in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. Suitable for use in Microsoft Word 97 or later, you can download the file and modify it to suit your needs. (Internet Explorer is required in order to download the file, though.)
Now, I have no idea where this particular agreement came from (many of the templates are contributed by users), and I haven't reviewed the actual document too carefully so I can't vouch for its usefulness. I did note that the withdrawal provision in the agreement is still using the outdated notion of assessing a 3% penalty. In these days of online, cut-rate brokerages, actual costs of full or partial withdrawal rarely amount to that much, so more and more clubs are reducing their withdrawal penalties to only be the actual costs associated with a member's withdrawal.
Still, I find it somewhat amusing to find a template for a club agreement tucked away with all the sample invoices, contracts, employment agreements, and other general business documents on a Microsoft Web site. I've often wondered what would happen if Microsoft decided to encourage its employees to start investment clubs -- that seems like a great way to quickly build a nation of investors.
